In this book, John takes us on his journey across the United States exploring the challenge of discovering individual definitions of peace. The journey is heart-warming and gut-wrenching and everything in-between. Reading the stories helped me determine my own biases and reminds me to view others with open-mindedness and compassion. For Portraits of Peace, Noltner traveled around the United States, asking a diverse cross-section of Americans what peace means to them. He listened deeply as people trusted him with stories of trauma, recovery, racism, reconciliation, faith, and community-building. As a journalist, I think a lot about non-extractive storytelling; John practices it in every encounter. And so people welcome him in, including those who have every reason to distrust a white, male, middle-aged stranger.
